Presidential Proclamation No. 183, s. 1993, declares the month of June as the National No-Smoking Month in the country. It aims to raise public awareness on the ill effects of smoking, as well as to encourage smokers to give up the habit. Led by the DOH, the National health observance encourages smokers to kick the habit “the sooner, the better,” and to stress that “it is never too late and no one is ever too old.” WHO statistics reveal some 5 million deaths annually from tobacco diseases. Health studies show that the most imporant contributor to illness and death is smoking. |
